Andy Moses
Vuelta
November 2 through December 2, 2006
Opening: Thursday November 2 – 6 to 8pm
McClain Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition Andy Moses, Vuelta.
The outward simplicity of Andy Moses’ paintings is misleading. Almost Minimalist in composition, Moses brilliantly captures the dynamic play in light and color commonly observed in landscape. The paintings are a true experience in space, color and light; a reexamination of the 1960s Light and Space movement. He departs from the earlier movement in the way his canvas’ explore the effects of color and light on the human psyche not so much from a intellectual point of view but from a sensorial and emotive perspective. The concave shaped canvas reflects light back to itself, helping the viscous pearlescent pigments shift hue and intensity in response to the surrounding natural light. Additionally, the unexpected curve of the canvas creates a vivid sculptural experience, as if the canvas is acting like a container holding the earth’s infinite horizon.
Andy Moses grew up in Santa Monica, California and now maintains a studio in Venice, California, where his love of the ocean’s natural beauty continues to inspire and inform his work. His work is widely collected privately and is included in the collections of Savannah University Museum, Moroni Foundation, Fredrick R. Weisman Foundation, and Frank Gehry.
